The Colour Red

***Please note that this is a work of fiction. The events told in this piece are not true though they were inspired by several articles read online such as http://www.salon.com/2011/05/26/abortion_saved_my_life/ and http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/05/25/490171/brazil-excommunication-for-abortion/?mobile=nc***

She looked in the mirror and rubbed her lips together, making sure the colour covered her pout completely. She smiled and blew her reflection a kiss. Time to knock them dead.

Not even ten minutes before, she was nervous about the speech she was about to give. Now that she had on her red lipstick, she felt ready to take on the room. Her red lipstick never failed to give her a confidence boost. It was her power lipstick. With that lipstick, she felt that she could conquer the world. And that was the feeling she needed right now.

Normally speeches wouldn’t bother her, but this speech was different. Normally she wasn’t speaking on a topic this close to her. Normally she wasn’t speaking on a topic this controversial.

Most people hear of abortions and they automatically go on one side or the other. However, most people haven’t been on either side of the argument.  It was to those people that she was supposed to talk to today.

Ever since the local pro-life group found out that the doctors had told her parents to abort her, they have been after her to give a speech at their rallies.

Likewise, ever since the pro-choice groups found out that she had an emergency abortion to save her life, they have wanted her to speak at their rallies.

It was a tough decision. Which side of the argument was she on? She could say that she was on the pro-life because, if the doctors had their way, she would not have been born. But she could also say that she was pro-choice because, without that abortion, she would be dead.

She has heard arguments from people on both sides. She has heard arguments from people who have never had to make the choice of life or death.

The choice is never easy. And it shouldn’t be an option that is considered as regular birth control. The effects aren’t just physical, there is a mental effect as well. After the abortion, she had to go through counseling. In fact, she was still going to therapy.

But, when both the mother and child may be lost? The choice is easy. Save one life rather than lose two.

Unfortunately, there are still people out there who are so anti-abortion that they fail to see that saving one life is better than losing two. Because they only see that it was an abortion.

So, when the speech has finished and her story is told, she will tell the audience that she is neither pro-life nor pro-choice. She is not pro-life because sometimes, abortions are necessary to save one of two lives which may be lost. She is also not pro-choice because abortions are not something that should be treated lightly.

Author:

The AP Roberts is an extremely rare creature and there is only one known AP Roberts in the world. Usually off in its own little world, the AP returns to reality when it gets lonely. This elusive creature is rather difficult to catch on film, however will pose for drawings. The AP, though wild by nature, can be tamed and makes a wonderful pet. It should also be known that while the AP gets along with most creatures it has an intense fear of insects and large canines. The AP lives on a diet of mainly vegetables and candy but is not known to refuse food that is made and offered through kindness. The drink of choice for the AP is tea though it is known to drink water and juice. There is still much to be learned of the AP however, most agree that the writings of the AP are truly something to behold. Hopefully, one day the AP will find a good Agent creature who will introduce the AP's writings to a good publisher creature and the world will be able to read the AP's works.
